I checked the book 'The Ashby Story A History of Geelong West' by Gladys
Seaton -- 'Little Scotland' is marked on the map in the frontispiece --I
thought that it was bounded by Pakington St [Melbourne Road] but see that it
extends towards Shannon Ave.[New Melbourne Road] --the other boundaries are
Latrobe Terrace; Aberdeen St. and Spring St. Running parallel to this
street was Western Gully-, now Gordon Ave. Western Gully contained a creek
or spring which drained in to the dam where Johnstone Park is located.
This dam was ordered by Governor La Trobe, but eventually it was emptied and
cleaned out because of the rubbish accumulation. The area became a quagmire
during wet weather. Pakington St. was the Melbourne Road then and later
Shannon Ave was the New Melbourne Road -- If you are interested in Geelong
West, the book 'The Ashby Story' is recommended reading - well indexed,
photographs & maps. The Geelong Regional Library has copies & it may be
obtainable at the Geelong Historical Records Centre. -- Shirley Costello
