G'day Anthony,

Your message definitely appeared on the list - in fact only 24 hours ago! I
know not everyone on the list accesses their email every day, so be
patient - with any luck I'm sure someone will come up with an answer or
suggestion for you.

In the meantime, I just had a quick look in "The Ashby Story" and there are
two references to St. Jude's Maternity Hospital ...

p. 105 : The Gwynne house was one of those large mansions built around the
fringe of Geelong in the eighteen-fifties. Recorded in Corio Shire's rate
books, it stood amongst its twelve acres for years, and became part of
Geelong West in the nineteen-twenties. It was probably the building which
became Miss Mary Cronin's St Jude's Maternity Hospital, demolished about
1959. Although the property was associated with the Gwynne name for decades
Robert Rede was the owner in the early eighteen-sixties. A Robert Rede was
Resident-Commissioner on the Ballarat goldfield from July 1854 to January
1855.

p. 204 : In 1922 everyone in Geelong was very proud of the new Kitchener
Memorial Hospital, although a place remained for those privately run.
Bide-a-Wee, in Catherine Street, St Jude's, and Cambrai and (later)
Pineville in Pakington Street, were in Geelong West. Private hospitals were
popular for maternity cases ...

All the best ...... Susie Z
