HISTORICAL CONTEXT John Pascoe Fawkner, of Melbourne, commissioned James
Harrison to found and edit the Geelong Advertiser, the
first issue appearing on 21 November 1840. Harrison
bought the paper in 1842 and remained as proprietor and
editor for twenty-five years. In 1973 the Geelong
Advertiser was acquired by the Herald and Weekly Times.
In 1977 the group bought the Bellarine Peninsula Echo,
and in 1980 acquired the Geelong News Group which
publishes the bi-weekly Geelong News and runs a
commercial printery.
