Hello Norman,

I have tried to research a pastoral run on the southern shores of Lake
Connewarre with mixed success, but I will pass on what I know as it may be
of use to you:

There was a squatting run of about 2 square miles in area, called
'Connewarre Lake station' registered by James Tait in the late 1840's. There
is some correspondence relating to this station in the pastoral run papers
at the Public Records Office in Melbourne. From memory, There was a letter
from Tait describing some improvements to the run, but not a lot of
information.

Connewarre Lake station is mentioned in the book called the Victorian
Squatters and also in Billis & Kenyon.

I have a copy of parish map of Connewarre showing the original purchasers of
the land in the Connewarre area and Tait's name is on some blocks in the
same area as the station was said to be located in the book Victorian
Squatters. I am not sure when the subdivision occurred.

Immediately to the west of Connewarre Station and also on the shores of Lake
Connewarre was a station called Barwon Lakes. This is the run I was
interested in. It was registered in the 1840's by John Day with various
partners at different times - Oldfield, Tulloh and later taken over by
Thomas Story and then James Tait (according to Victorian Squatters - it does
not exactly agree with Billis and Kenyon about names and dates with this
run). I'm afraid I did not get very far finding primary source
documentation about this run. I would love to hear about your progress if
you know more.

I hope this helps. I'm sure there must be more to this area of research than
what I was able to uncover.

regards

Kay
