Dear Norman

Many thanks for your reply. This is what I was given to work with on
Saturday!

Catherine Maguire (1823 - 1902) was the daughter of Henry Maguire, a seaman
from Limerick in Eire; and Mary Kelly. I haven't made a start on them. A
note says that she was previously married to a Keef/Kief/Keefe who died in
Ireland, and that she was widowed at 24. I looked up every variant spelling
of Keef or O'Keef, on the Immigration to Victoria index, and the only
Catherine was a nun who would be the wrong age. I found a Catherine Maguire
arriving in June 1852 on the ship Mangerton. She is described as an adult.
There are four other Maguires on the ship - no idea if they were related.
They were two other adults, John and Samuel; and two children, Jemima and
William. If Catherine was a widow then she was using her maiden name on
this voyage.

Catherine married William Moore (1820 - 1901), and they had Joseph (1859 -
1930) - he married an Ellen Dans; Alice who married ?Morrison, William
(1863 - 1914) who married Louisa Jane Matthews of Geelong, in 1886. They
had children William Joseph, who married Agnes Margaret Lowerson (this is
the line that son-in-law, Andrew comes from); Albert who married Effie
Barnes; Adelaide Lousa who married Albert Burr, Thomas James who married
Claire somebody from New Zealand, and Myrtle Mary who married Alfred Degner.

Louisa Jane Matthew' mother was Mary Williams (1842 - 1919) - and today, I
found that Mary's parents names were William and Mary. She came from
Cornwall to Melbourne on the ship Vanguard in March 1865. Louisa's father
was William Matthews (1833 - 1889) who was born in St Just, Cornwall. He
arrived in Melbourne on the ship Great Britain (a famous one, now at
Historic Dockyard at Bristol, UK) in Feb 1868. He married Mary Williams in
1868.

They had three children, Louisa Jane (1869 - 1940), James (who I suspect
died aged 2) and Amelia (who was Mary Amelia really - another of today's
discoveries!).

So far, I have not had any luck in tracing William Matthews in St Just, but
someone in Cornwall has offered to look up the St Just churchtown 1851
census next time he is in Redruth. There are also copies at the Family
Record Centre in London, so haven't given up yet.

I haven't included details of William Moore's ancestry here - but if the
above sounds correct - let me know.

Susan Baines
