Hello Sheila
I think John Dean was one of the late Beth Blackall's family. There are
files on him in the Geelong Family History Group files.
In Beth's Batesford book.

The connection between Sydenham in Oxfordshire and Batesford was forged in
1844 with the arrival on the "Wallace' of poverty stricken labourers, John
White and John Dean with their families. Sydenham and the nearby villages
had reached the point in 1843 when there was no room for their increasing
population, there was severe unemployment because of an economic depression
resulting from the Napoleonic wars, and the Poor Law Rates could no longer
support the numbers of local destitute. The recently discovered Minute Book
of the Vestry meetings of an adjacent parish for 1843 details the procedures
and costs arising from the decision to take advantage of an immigration
assistance scheme funded by the sale of Crown Lands in the Australian
Colonies. The Vestry borrowed sufficient funds in London to provide fifteen
families with the perquisites demanded by the immigration authorities :
marriage and baptismal certificates, two outfits for each season, children's
dresses, surgical examinations and vaccinations, and the travel costs to
Liverpool from where the "Wallace" departed.
John and Phillis Dean were in the area by 1848 when their daughters
Elizabeth and Mary married brothers James and Emmanuel White. The Whites
bought small farms at Modewarre on the other side of Geelong when land
became available there in the early 1850s. Sixth generation Deans are living
in Batesford still.
There is a photo of John Dean and St Mary's Church Sydenham.
