Hello ,
I wonder if anyone can help me with this family:
I am trying to determine the place of birth/parents of a James Rock, born about 1843/4. When he married in Warrnambool in 1868 he claimed to be born in Co. Kildare, Ireland. His parents are listed as John ROCK/Elizabeth McNAMARA. On his death certificate his son says that his father was born in Geelong, and no parents are listed.
Now in the Pioneer Index there is a birth (2 entries) for a James Rock (parents James ROCK/Elizabeth MACK) in 1844 (Geelong), also a birth for Alexander ROCK (parents James ROCK/Eliza McNamara) in 1845 (Ashby). A James ROCK aged 46 died in 1845 at Ashby - and could have been the father of both these children.
Can someone tell me how much information would be available on these early (St. Marys Roman Catholic Geelong) birth certificates - also what is the difference between the ones where two certificates exist for the same child? Is one more informative than the other? Are these church records/fiches available anywhere to look at (other than having to buy the certificates?)
Also looking for anyone with connections to this family.
