For those interested in this subject, here are some more quotes from the
Book "Australians In The Waikato War by L.L.Barton. ( he is Australian )
"At first married recruits were sought but as these were not forthcoming in
sufficient numbers, single men made up the majority of the enlistments. some
11 ships were charted to carry the recruits across the Tasman and the
passengers included nearly 1000 wives and children. Although the Australian
public was enthusiastic, the press and the Govts of Victoria and NSW were
soon protesting at this drain on the manpower of the colonies. This led the
NZ Govt to cancel the mission , although it appesrs that recruiting was
still being carried out well into March 1864"
