Susie,
Thanks for your email and suggestions - very helpful.
The employment record is handwritten, but doesn't look like a copy of an old
document, so is probably just a transcription of the record - so I guess
there could be some mistakes. I'll try and find out if it's possible to see
the original record. Also, he could have said anything really about his
previous employment, as they were unlikely to check it out such a long way
from Australia.
The fact he was called Edward KELLY has been a bit of a family joke over the
years I think - having the same name as an outlaw. Evanie (on the list) made
a good point that it would be a good alias as nobody would think you'd take
a name like that on purpose!
Thanks for checking the name Nathaniel COHEN and John KELLY on the
immigration records - I had looked briefly at the immigration records, but
when I saw so many John KELLYs (and no way to narrow down which one it might
be) I gave up for the time being!!
However, in a recent search through the list archives, I found a message
with a list of Police Court Reports, and a John KELLY came up:
KELLY, John 24.12.1850 (reported in Geelong Advertiser)
It doesn't say what it's about, so I've emailed the heritage centre as they
apparently have the full record (and they replied today to tell me its on
its way). Could John have been sent to Australia as a convict, and when his
sentence ended, got married and had a family? That might explain Edward's
reluctance for sharing his past history... However, as John KELLY is such a
common name, how would we know if it was the correct one?
I had a moment of excitement when I found an Edward KELLY, son of John KELLY
on the "First Families" website, but it turns out that Edward was hung in
1880 at the Old Melbourne gaol - it doesn't say what for.
The KEETLEY records you found look a possible, especially as the date of
birth is the same and the surname very similar. Where was William Edward
KEETLEY born?
This really makes me realise how much I have relied on the UK census for
tracing my ancestors in other lines of the family!! It's good to learn other
techniques and I'm finding out a lot about Australian history along the way.
I feel like we've tried so many different routes to trace Edward, and
hopefully there will continue to be alternative things to look into - and
maybe eventually we will find him!
Thanks again,
Emily

Hi Emily,
<snip> Do you have a copy of the original Police employment record or is it
a
transcription? <snip>
<snip> Of course there are heaps of options for immigration if his name was
John KELLY! <snip>
<snip> Using Edward's date of birth there is one interesting entry in South
Australia ....
William Edward KEETLEY (could be a mistranscription of KELLEY?) born 7th Feb
1859, parents William KEETLEY and Mary DANIEL. Then again, there is a death
for William and Mary KEETLEY in 1891 and 1895 in South Australia so it looks
like that was actually their surname. <snip>
