Hi Jill

Under the heading 'Botanical Gardens': 'History of Geelong & Corio
Bay with Postscript' page 218 ... A new fence merited a new main
entrance gate, so the Council let further contracts -£128 to E. and
C. Martin for bluestone pillars ...
This was in 1874.

In a chapter titled 'Hotel Life': page 384 '... When Edwin Martin
opened at the Cricket Club-hotel, Chilwell, early in 1854 a large
number of the residents rallied to show their interest. Martin
responded by arranging an inauguration dinner for 18th April, to
which his 'numerous friends' were publicly invited, with this
inducement: "Dinner, which is gratuitous, will be on the table at 7
o'clock". On that night the generous host was almost embarrassed by
the numerical strength of his friends.'

Page 415 in a chapter called 'Search for Mineral Wealth': The
prospectus of the Geelong, Newtown and Chilwell Gold and Coal
Prospecting and Mining Company was circulated. The following were
named as a provisional Board of Directors and Committee - ... ...
... etc etc Edwin Martin ... .... etc etc'
This was in August 1862.
