Hello Graham ,
I will have to answer your query over several messages, because I cannot
type for very long:
All those named did, indeed, arrive as exiles on the ships named.
In my early research on recidivism of the exiles, I collected little
snippets.
First, of the 1728 exiles who landed in Port Phillip 266 aliases are
recorded both from the original lists and the prison records 1851-1861 and
188 prisoners are named as "exiles"in those records.
In the period 1845-1850 the police admitted, because exiles arrived "free"
they were treated as "first offence" when they strayed, and, as the police
received no lists of these exiles, they were unable to say if persons
brought before their courts were "exiles" or really free immigrants, even
though the government of NSW (then in charge of Port Phillip) twice sought
the figures to pass on to the British government. An estimate was made of
79, with no records to agree or deny.
My research in the limited records in the dates I indicated suggest that one
in six returned to crime. This means that 5 in 6 either were good citizens,
or too clever to be caught. We do know that many moved to other states (and
NZ) where, particularly if they lived with an alias, they are unable to be
used in the statistics.
So here is the first note I have:
> Chaundy, William, arr PP on Eden in 1849>
His wife and child arrived to join him on 28 Aug 1850. (He was obviously
well-behaved, and likely had a written approval by his employer. Not
everyone managed such reunions, even after repeated applications.)
> Clifford, Daniel, arr PP on Thomas Arbuthnot in 1847>
There were two with this surname on this ship, but their given names were
James and Lewin. (I will check my notes later to see if they had Oxfordshire
connections.)
Sorry, the pain in my arm and hand is taking over. I will have to stop for
at least 24 hours.
Regards Ada
