Hello again, Jan. You have given me great help in the past, and will
be on my Thank You list in the book (if I can fit it in!). And you
have given me some COOPER women married to Highton Wesleyans, who may
or may not be related to John. Many of them seem to come from an area
in England where Bedfordshire, Cambridge, and Hertford all converge.
The trouble is that I can't tell if Hannah BIRD's husband is my John
COOPER or not! If that couple lived in Highton in the 1860s, why
would they have registered the births of their children at Modewarre?
Robyn, thank you very much for copying out those marriages. I presume
the dates are of the marriage, and the date of birth is deduced from
the person's possible age. Only one of the people you mention appears
to be the child of a John COOPER, although it should be possible to
do a search for the parents of the others. But the Sarah COOPER who
married Joseph HALL was probably the child of John & Hannah COOPER,
as she and her older brother were reg. at Ashby and Geelong
respectively. Sarah was born 1857, so she's have been 19.
I shall keep your information on hand, and may be able to link it
with something else.
Margaret and Anne, your earliest COOPER, Thomas, could possibly be
the son of a John, so please let me know if you find out more. The
only Thomas COOPER on the list of Geelong cemeteries is Thomas C,
buried in 1972 at the Geelong Eastern Cemetery. I got some details of
COOPERs from shipping lists, but there are just so many that it's
hard to arrange them into different families; and I've found at least
11 adult Johns arriving as Assisted Immigrants before 1860, and about
20 Unassisted in the period 1852-1860. At the moment the PROV website
seems to be down, so I can't search for a Thomas who may have come
out as a child.
Life wasn't meant to be easy!
Thanks, and good hunting, to all.
Marion
