Hi Linda,
Sorry to take so long to reply - car repairs to be done, visitors to collect
and entertain, etc. Re the props, backgrounds, and clothing in old colonial
photos, it is my understanding that the backgrounds for "studio" photos were
portable, often painted backdrops, such as would be used in the theatre.
There were a few special pieces of furniture, eg chair, table, plant stand,
etc. I believe that the photographer would have some pieces of clothing to
loan the client if necessary, eg a jacket, to give the impression of a
successful life in the colonies for photos sent "back home".
