Hi Liz,

Talked to the school late last week and yes, they do have some records
sitting in an archive box in the office. These include examination lists and
pupil registers for the 1880s, 1890s and early 1900s which I had a look at.
Some of them were in rather fragile condition. The bad news for you is that
I couldn't find any Dentens/Dentons in any of them and I looked for a few
years either side of your dates. The rest of the collection included
newspaper clippings across the years, a couple of projects and a variety of
photos.
Whilst I was there, one of the office staff printed off a short history of
the school. I asked where she got it, but I don't think she understood and
didn't answer, but it might be from the website. But in reading it I did
notice the following which may be relevant:

"In 1893, the school was amalgamated with Swanston Street State School and
only Junior grades up to year 4 attended. After a petition was circulated,
grades 5-8 recommenced at South Geelong on April 19th 1909."

Reading this, I guess it would depend what age your Dentens were when they
attended the school, which campus they were at. If they were grade 5 or
older, I guess they'd have been at Swanston Street, not South. The article
gives a potted history up to about 2009. I can transcribe it for you if
you'd like.

I didn't see anything much in the way of info about the school buildings
themselves, but I think you were given quite a bit of that sort of stuff by
other listers.

Hope this helps a little.

Cheers,

Jo

Thank you Jo, that would be great if you could check about the building for
me.
The family members, William Joseph and George Ronald Denten (sometimes
incorrectly spelt Denton), attended in the early 1900's (up until about
1906, I think).
The Geelong and District website have the indexes listed for the school in
this era, but upon requesting the information from the register it was found
that the relevant years were not among the GFHG holdings. It was suggested
to me that perhaps the school holds the original registers, but I haven't
gotten around to contacting them about that. If it's not too much trouble
could you ask if they hold any of the original pupil registers, please?
I just had a quick look at Picture Australia but couldn't see any for this
school, maybe I'll have a better look later.
I don't think I need any other pictures unless the ones I took are of the
wrong building.
Thank you very much for your help, look forward to hearing from you soon.
cheers,
Liz
