POPULATION, ECONOMY AND FAMILY STRUCTURE IN HERTFORDSHIRE IN 1851
This major new series of twelve volumes is based on the work of the
University of Hertfordshire Historical Resources Project which, with the
help of local historians and genealogists, has computerised the records for
the 167,298 individuals recorded as living in Hertfordshire in the 1851
Census. This is the first fully mature and reliable English census and this
is the first time its results have been computerised and analysed for an
entire English county. It provides a mine of fascinating information about
mid-nineteenth century society of great historical importance and local
interest.

Volume 1: the Berkhamsted region (Book)
This first volume covers the parishes of Aldbury, Great Berkhamsted, Little
Gaddesden, Northchurch, Puttenham, Tring and Wigginton, which collectively
formed the Berkhamsted Superintendent Registrar's District. It provides a
snapshot of the entire community of 11,578 individuals on census night in
1851, and combines an historical overview with attention to individual lives
in mid-Victorian Hertfordshire.
$48.00

Volume 2: St Albans and its region by Nigel Goose (Book)
In addition to the three parishes which fall within the city of St Albans
this second volume includes the out hamlets of Sleapshyde, Colney Heath,
Smallford and Tyttenhanger and the neighbouring towns and villages of
Harpenden, Redbourn, Sandridge and Wheathampstead.
Part One presents a detailed historical analysis of the census, covering
topics such as population, age, sex and marital structure, cottage
industries, the straw and Brazilian hat trade, the employment of women and
children, the region's farming economy, migration and the composition of the
family and household.
Part Two contains the census returns themselves. This data provides
opportunities for further historical analysis, some fascinating insights
into the circumstances of particular individuals and their families, and
will prove invaluable to the family historian and genealogist. The volume
includes period maps of the city, hamlets and villages and is completed by a
comprehensive index of names.
$66.00
