Double Bridges became an important stopping place about the year 1890, and
it is believed that the building that was to become the hotel was erected in
the mid 1880s by Alfred Lucas. He obtained the Victuallers License for the
premises on the 11 Nov, 1890. It was known as Double Bridges Hotel and also
the Halfway Hotel
Cobb & Co. erected their stables their and used the premises as a changing
station for their horses, they also arrived in time for their passengers to
obtain breakfast.
The License changed hands several times during its lifetime, these included
Harold Lowe, and after his death Mrs. Lowe married Jack O'Conner and they
carried on the business, with George Weston being the last. It closed down
in the 1920s and the main building was shifted up to Tambo Crossing, to
become the home of George Dean. The other buildings remained there for many
years and purchased by a stock agent, being used as a camping place for
drovers.
Several photos exist of this unique hotel, one being printed in the
Gippsland Calendar produced by Linda and Debbie
