The Gippsland Time Line is posted to the list in irregular posts - if anyone
has any additions, corrections or suggestions, please feel free to engage in
historical discussion! :) Some of you may even come up with important dates
we have missed. Some state, national and world events are included for
comparison.

Population of Gippsland is 3634.
Nov 7: Election in Gippsland. Johnson of Mewburn Park defeats Dexter.
Dec 12: Bennison at Carrier's Arms in Sale.
Late: Thomas Telfer Stirling arrives in East Gippsland and soon after takes
over the Corringle run.
unk: Photograph of Omeo township taken by unknown photographer - possibly
the oldest photograph of Gippsland.
unk: Mechanics' Institute built at Sale.
unk: First contract let for the Melbourne to Sale coach road.
unk: A low level bridge is built over the Latrobe River at Sale.
unk: Alluvial gold discovered at Boggy Creek on the Nicholson and
Cassilis/Tongio.

March: McArdell launches the Enterprise at Sale. It is restricted to the
Thomson River due to the bridge built downstream after McArdell started
building the boat. It remained there at least nine months until, with the
assistance of a flood, it was able to gain access to the Lakes.
Apr 13: Robert Campbell brings Georgina Smith across the bar into the lakes
to start local shipping.
Apr 30: Bennison granted a provisional licence for the Club Hotel at Sale,
pending its opening on 1 July.
Aug 17: Murder at Sale of Richard Dothwaite. Tarra Bobby and Billy Login
charged,
Sep: Gold discovered on the Wentworth River.
unk: Antoine Fauchery and Richard Daintree travel through Gippsland and take
photographs.
unk: Dr Arbuckle appointed Coroner, Commissioner of the Peace and Public
Vaccinator at Sale, holding the positions until his death.
unk: Tyers appointed magistrate for Alberton.
unk: Ewan McMillan born at Bushy Park.
unk: Lakes and rivers explored by Campbell.
unk: Bairnsdale township surveyed.
unk: Reef gold discovered at Swifts Creek and Omeo.
unk: Gold mining at Bullumwaal.

De Graves buys Omeo run from Macfarlane.

Jan 6: Gold buyer Cornelius Green murdered at Swifts Creek.
Jan 25: Inquest held at Omeo into the death of Green.
Mar 21: Armstrong and Chamberlain acquitted of murder of Green.
Jun 19: W.O. Raymond dies on the Loddon.
Jul 12: Armstrong and Chamberlain executed for the attempted murder of
Constable Green, arising from the attack on Cornelius Green.
Sep 22: McMillan elected to Legislative Assembly.
Nov 30: Traralgon proclaimed a village.
Nov: Warrant for arrest of John Paynter (Bogong Jack).
Dec: Paynter acquitted of horse theft and disappears
unk: Coach service operating from Sale to connect with the steamer to
Melbourne from Port Albert.
unk: The Gippsland Independent newspaper commences at Sale.
unk: Alluvial gold discovered at Merrijig and rush at Cobungra. Gold known
to exist at Bemm River.
