Hello List
Sale Historical Society Sunday Talks Program for July will feature
Local Historian Peter Synan talking on The Early Wine Industry in
Gippsland.

Wine growing has been an activity carried out in Gippsland since the
early development of the province. Earliest reports document the
production of local wine, albeit in small quantities, in the Sale and
South Gippsland areas in the early 1860s.

A few years later, Swiss settlers, particularly in the Briagolong area,
introduced a number of grape varieties, and wine was made in sufficient
quantity to sell, both locally and overseas. Wine produced at the Delta
Vineyard won prizes in London wine shows.

Yarra Valley winemaker Hubert de Castella, 1n 1886, wrote glowingly of
the suitability of Gippsland for the growing of grapes.

Todays flourishing wine industry is a continuation of that early
enterprise.

SUNDAY JULY 18TH, SALE MUSEUM, FOSTER STREET, AT 2PM.
ALL WELCOME

Ann Synan
