Judy Whitaker,
"The Ridge" is a well-known property situated on a prominent ridge north of
the town of Rosedale (across the Latrobe River). It originally formed part
of Snake Ridge Run of 60,000 acres. According to the late I.T. Maddern (The
Centenary History of the Shire of Rosedale, 1971), the name was given to the
ridge by Angus McMillan who "found a snake there which had been killed by
the Blacks". The station was held by John Reeve in 1842 and then by John
King in 1847.Snake Ridge Run was divided in 1866. "The Ridge" was
subsequently held by Donald McLeod (1866), William Essington King (1871),
James Tyson (1876) and later by A. Bowman. "The Ridge" is still in the hands
of a member of the Bowman family.
