Here are some OCR-scans relating to Neil Weir and his family - one from
Madden's book and two from Macreadie's book .(referred to by Claire).
I. Madden's book, page 68:
'Catherine Ferguson, 11-1-1868 and David Weir, 12-1-1868:
The "Guardian" reported on the unusual occurrence of funerals on
successive days at Rosedale. Catherine Ferguson, taking a lift on one of
Henry Luke's drays bringing supplies to his store at Rosedale, from Port
Albert, was killed when the dray hit a stump and overturned, on the Port
Albert-Rosedale Road. No cause of death was given for the lad David Weir,
son of a widow. We wonder, if this was the same boy who gave the alarm on
the night when the coach-driver was drowned, less than four months earlier.
These deaths occurred before William Allen began his careful
entries in the Cemetery Register, and neither is listed. However, in the
preliminary compilation on the first page occurs the entry, "Ferguson,
Glenmaggie". Perhaps the relatives of Catherine Ferguson put up a wooden
cross for her, which lasted long enough for William Allen to record the
name. Perhaps the widow, Mrs. Weir, was unable to erect any memorial over
her son's grave. Thomas Cox, 31-3-1868:'
pp 228-9: 'The Cemetery . . . 28th July 1861. Neil Weir was only 43 and died
