Hi,
I am in UK and I don't know if I am on the right list, but I had been looking
for information about my gggrandfather Edward Oke LANE, who came to Melbourne
c 1850, when I received some interesting details from the Digger - Pioneer
index amongst others, leading me to believe that Edward's 3 brothers also
came to Aus., possibly on the 'Elizabeth' in March 1853. Their names were
Henry - died Melbourne 1861, Thomas and Richard Oke LANE.
The 4 brothers were born in Fowey Cornwall England, to William and Catherine
nee Stribley LANE
I have a marriage of Richard LANE to Emma HODSON and the birth of Mary to
Richard Oak LANE and Emma HODSON.
A Richard Oke LANE died in 1902 in Mirboo North, aged 68 (this is correct for
my Richard, who was born in 1834, Fowey Cornwall England.)
Digger - Pioneer index Reg. no.6762
Can anyone suggest where I go from here please?
SKS from another Australian list gave me the following information and I
wonder if anyone knows anything about the road?
>Well, I can tell you that Lanes Rd is only a very short road which leads
>to a dead end, so I would expect that it was the sort of road that just
>led to a farm or something of somebody named Lane. To find out which
>Lane, I would think you'd have to go to old Council rates records. This
>area is now covered by the Shire of South Gippsland (the councils were
>reorganised a few years ago, it would have been Mirboo Shire before that
Many thanks for any help,
Sylvia in wet,cold UK
