Hello list,
I think I have found the arrival of my g-grandfather Benjamin Timms into Australia. The PRO assisted passage records have a Benjamin Timms aged 24 arriving on the "Echunga" in 1857. There is also listed one Bridget Hayes aged 22 on the same ship. Benjamin Timms married a Bridget Hayes in 1873. In 1866 Benjamin Timms had taken up a block at Glenmaggie. Oral family history states that prior to this he was a ploughman at Tinamba.
It seems a long time between arriving in Australia and getting married. Is this the right Bridget Hayes as I have quite large discrepancies in her age if I look at their marriage certificate, Bridget's grave at Glenmaggie and her stated age on the ship's listing. I haven't as yet been able to find her birth in Ireland. Benjamin Timms was born in 1832 in Buckinghamshire England (according to the IGI). Bridget gave birth to her last child in 1884.
Any thoughts on any of this from the list would be appreciated. Where were they between 1857 and 1866 - Tinamba all that time? On the marriage certificate Benjamin is listed as a Farmer and Bridget as a Domestic Servant.
Regards
Majella Laws
