Obituary

Madame Ada Crossley, Australia's greatest contralto, who was world-famous as a concert and oratorio singer died in London on October 17. Madame Ada Crossley was a native of Toora, a small town in South Gippsland. Her beautiful contralto voice was well-known throughout the district for some years before the knowledge of her talent became widely known. After appearing at a local charity concert, she was advised to go to Melbourne, where Sir Frederick Cowan heard her voice , and recommended a course of study . She studied singing during 1892-3 with Madam Fanny Simonsen and Music with Signor Zelman. In 1893 she went to Europe and continued her studies under Madame Marchesi in Paris. Madame Ada Crossley made her debut at Queen's Hall, London, in 1895 and was an immediate success.
