Hi Peter,
Thank you so much for that. It is a great help.
I'm going to try and get a copy of the book. Does it show the map with
Cumberland Creek marked on?
Thanks again,
Elaine

Hello Elaine,
Luke Steenhuis in his book "Ghost Towns of the Mountain Goldfields" has
a
small section of on-liners under the grouping "The following localities
are
either on the fringe of the mountain districts, or in the author's
opinion,
its existence may not have been significant enough to be classified as a
town" and includes "Cumberland Creek:- Mining locality near Mt Arnold on
the Yarra Track."
The book also mentions Cambarville which had the alternate name of
Cumberland [without the Creek part], which is a few km SE of Mt Arnold.
Luke says the name comes from the two Marysville sawmilling families
CAMERON and BARTON. Cambarville is about 15km east of Marysville. It was
mainly a saw-milling town. One sentence says "During the 1860s there
were
several restaurants or shantys situated along the track around Mount
Arnold
and Cumberland Creek".
On the map the actual creek itself is about half a km west of
Cambarville.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Peter
