Hi Elaine & Laurie
According to the Victorian Gazetteer, Cumberland Creek was in the County
of
Polwarth. The following is extracted from the Gazetteer. The gazetteer
is
derived from information published in 1879 and supplemented with the
current
place name.
Polwarth county is a large tract of country lying on the sea coast to
the
S.W. of the county Grant. It is bounded on the N. by county Grenville,
from
which it is seperated by the head of the Barwon river, lake Colac, and
an
imaginary line, thence to lake Korangamite; on the E. by the sea and
county
Grant; on the W. by county Heytesbury, from which it is seperated by the
Gellibrand river and an imaginary line to the S. of lake Korangamite;
and on
the S. by the sea.
But little is known of this county, a very large portion of it being
inaccessible from the rugged nature of the country and the large swamps,
which in many places bar all progress from the coast and from the N. of
the
county. A range of high and precipitous mountains, called the Black
range,
lie to the W.; and a chain called the Cape Otway ranges run in a line
with
the coast at a distance of about 20 or 30 miles.
Cape Otway is the most S. point, and has a lighthouse burning a
revolving
white light on its S.W. extremity, and a telegraph station in
communication
with Melbourne. The geological formation is generally carbonaceous,
showing
numerous coal seams, some of which crop out on the coast, but none of
which
are very thick.
Hope this helps.
