Linda
I am glad to see you have acknowledged Orbost as on checking this
magnificent list I see 4 relatives of mine all great aunts not only
representing Orbost but also Geelong and Bairnsdale. These aunts were all
strong and outspoken women and it is not surprising to see them listed. I
can recall my father saying that one in particular Isabella Watt was a
powerful women who insisted that all men, while in her presence, including
school boys doff their hats/caps . Failing to do so would result in a cuff
over the ears. All these aunts succeeded their husbands and eventually set
up house to-gether in Melbourne in the 1920's and were renowned for their
dinner parties wherein the menu's were printed in French. Their mother of
course was an old Gippslander and the "Snowy River Mail" wrote a fine
tribute to her which appeared in 1926.
In my case I know my great grandmother would never allow her daughters to
take a secondary role to men, and the regional difference could be partially
due to whether you were a selector or freeholder. My family were all
selectors and because of this were frowned upon by some elements of society.
This caused them to push harder for recognition and attempt to knockdown the
barriers caused by the negative perception of being a selector.
Meanwhile congratulations to the Government for this website, its a credit,
and thank you to J.Hunt for drawing it to my attention.
