Hi Doug

Illiteracy, pronunciations, local dialects, many factors no doubt
contribute. In my Scottish MARTIN families in Fife I have 26 different
spellings to check when going through the records! It is very time
consuming and some are obvious over the centuries with replacing 'Y' with
'I'. In the Cornish accent, my g-g-grandmother was the informant for all
her children and signed with a 'X' (her mark) and her maiden name of OPIE
was recorded here in Victoria and, from memory, all different spellings by
the scribe of the time even to the extent the last one was 'APPY' (perhaps
she was glad it was the last)? (grin)

What can be extremely annoying is when a researcher/family member tries to
insist that it was NEVER spelt that way in THEIR family. Don't I just love
it when we find and prove that elusive missing family member with a spelling
variation for those individuals! Have one coming up on Saturday where the
name is PARROTT where the bird pronunciation is insited as incorrect but a
short 'a' - like P-ROT. Hmmm ..... I wonder what the reaction is going to
be when it is discovered that one guy's nick-name a way back was 'Polly?'

Cheers

Hi Liz,
I often wonder if it has to do with literacy
problems of the individuals who record names on such
things as shipping, registrations etc. etc.

I've had numerous family members recorded with changes
to their surname, even siblings.

Doug.
