Hi Liz
Further to your query My mothers mother was Isabelle Wittick her
Grandfather was according to his convict record Walter Wrightwick.
Obviously this was written by a clerk in Stafford court. When he was
married in VDL the minister wrote the name as Wrightwick, some of his
children were born in the name of Whittick, Wittaker. He died in
Melbourne and the clerk at Births, Deaths and Marriages spelt his name
as Whitwick. I have also found the family under other spellings.
I believe because Walter and his wife were both illiterate, he could not
check the spelling as written. Also the accents of each person and their
position. That is, a minister or court official would most likely be
better education than a clerk in a records office.
