I will put here part of an extract from the "Rangoon Gazette of 31st
August 1931 written by J.L. McCallum, Financial commissioner, Burma.
On Monday night there passed away at taunggyi one of the oldest British
residents of the Shan States, Frank Alfred Clift, one of Natures
gentlemen. Taunggyi will never be the same again without his cheery
presence.
Clift was a cockney, born in Hounslow in 1863. He enlisted in the army
and came to India in a cavalry regiment, passed through Roorkee and was
sent to Burma in 1890.
It ws 1898 that Clift first came to the Shan states, where he first
spent several years in Loimwe and Loilem. He became States Engineer in
1920.
He leaves behind a widow and two children in Taunggyi and has two sons
by a former marriage in the services in Burma, one in the Police, the
other in the electric department.
*the reason, I shared this is it is in hope that someone reading this
may know of these children. My husbands Grandfather was one of the
children to F.A.Clift and they had to flee Burma to Australia because of
the War.
