Dear Dale and others,

If you can get to the city search room of the PRO in Melbourne, they
have a microfiche copy of Les Blake's "Place Names of Victoria", an
extremely useful book which is also held by various libraries - try your
local one, and ask for an interlibrary loan to be arranged if they don't
hold it themselves. The PRO also has a list of abbreviations of place
names as used in official indices, which is handy to try before
consulting Blake.

The State Library of Victoria holds Bailliere's 1865 gazetteer of
Victoria, which is particularly useful for goldmining towns. I think
this may also be around on microfiche. Municipal libraries are
increasing their local history and genealogical reference holdings all
the time, so do use their resources.

Good luck.

Fi in Melbourne.
