Dear Keith & Everyone,
There were 2 places in Vic which could have been "Stua" , Stuart Mill
(in County of Kara Kara, 16 miles from St Arnaud - population 200 in
1879) and Mount Stuart (at "Linton's" in Grenville Co.).
However a look at the births, marriages & deaths shows that all of the
listings for "Stua" appear to be Stuart Mill with the same
people/families often appearing under both tags - there are no name tags
of Mount Stuart. 1863 was the first year births were registered at
"Stua", the first listing for "Stuart Mill" was 1866. From 1863-1888
('88 is last year covered by this CD) there were 427 Births, Deaths or
Marriages for people born at Stua / Stuart Mill - peaking in 1870 at 40
births.
I looked in the gazetteer for Stewart as well - 3 are listed; Stewarton
(6 miles from Talbot - also called "Duck Ponds"), Stewart's Ponds (in
Evelyn Co.) and Stewart's Range (in Kara Kara)
In case you haven't noticed I enjoy doing look-ups from the gazetteer or
BDM Indexes 1836-1901, so don't be shy about asking.
Regards,
Jeanne C
P.S. The families I'm researching on the goldfields are: Nelson (from
Monaghan in Ireland) & Brady (from New York in America) - mostly at
Clunes, Williams & Pugh (from Merionethshire in Wales) - mostly at
Smeaton, Finlayson & McDougall (from the Islands of Skye & North Uist in
Scotland) - mostly around Clunes & Allandale.
