Hi Everyone,
During 1863 while the Confederate army of Robert E. Lee marched
to its destiny at Gettysburg, half a world away in the new colony of
New Zealand, thousands of eager Victorian miners were arriving at Otago
to look for gold. Many miners found the conditions, cost of supplies,
climate and depth of gold not to their liking and headed back on the next
available boat. Of those who stayed some were never heard from again.
While I was looking through some film of the Otago Daily Times I came
across some lists of names for unclaimed letters. One list is for the post
offices, Dunstan and Manuherika Junction for the month ending 28th February
1863 and the other is for the Chief post office, Dunedin for the month ending
31st March 1863. If anyone would like a name looked up I would be happy to do
so.
Regards,
Keith (Nelson, New Zealand)
