The Gazetter of Victoria makes 3 references to Jim Crow - Jim Crow Creek,
Jim Crow Diggings and Jim Crow Mount, all in the County of Talbot. The
description of the County as made in around 1870 is as follows "Talbot
county is situated in the N.W. province. It is bounded on the N. by Cos.
Bendigo and Gladstone from which it is seperated by the Loddon river and the
Bet-Bet creek; on the E. by Dalhousie, from which it is separated by the
Coliban creek; on the S. by Cos. Bourke, Grant, Grenville, and Ripon, from
which it is separated by the Pyrenees mountains; on the W. by the Loddon and
Wimmera districts. The population of Talbot is employed in agricultural and
mining operations, the latter on the goldfields of Alma, Maryborough,
Amherst, Castlemaine, Glenlyon, Daylesford, Yandoit, and Creswick. The
greater portion of the county has been surveyed and subdivided, and consists
of land available for agricultural purposes, much of which is under
cultivation. The population of the county numbers 84,762 persons over five
years of age."
