I know that my Great Grandfather George Drummond was in Kyneton on 18 July
1862 when he married Elizabeth McLauchlan but I can't find any reference to
him either arriving in Australia or when he and Elizabeth left Australia to
settle in New Zealand.

I found a book in our library listing Ship's Deserters that includes a
notice dated 7 January 1863 of the New South Wales Police Gazette referring
to a George Drummond having deserted from HMSS Pioneer.

Can sks tell me:

1. Where I would be able to find details of the Pioneers movements around
1862/3.
(I assume that this was a British rather than an Australian naval vessel)
Hopefully a website address exists.

2. What sort of delay could occur between the actual desertion and any
posting a notice in the Police Gazette.

3. Would New South Wales police have any jurisdiction in Victoria around
that time.

4. What was the duty of a Customs Office at that time. Were incoming /
outgoing passengers recorded or was their duty purely related to freight.

Thanks in anticipation of any information that anyone can supply.
