I've read a couple of passing references about him: apparently he names
Maryborough & Castlemaine after places in Ireland which had some
significance in his childhood.

Have you tried ADB ?

I am trying to trace James Daly (1829 Cork-1872 Jericho)who was a Gold
Warden/Police Magistrate/Chinese Protector in
Daylesford,Ballarat,Maryborough,Woods Point etc.
I was wondering the best areas to seek information on him,especially as he
was a Government official.
