The Ballaarat Mechanics' Institute

Twilight Talks

Spring Session

Richard Davies Ireland was an Irish barrister who defended people involved in two uprisings, one in Ireland in 1848 and one here in 1854. He became one of Victoria's top criminal lawyers and was one of Victoria's two first QCs. He went into Parliament where he aquired a thoroughly bad reputation. He also was named in Victoria's very first divorce case, though this accusation was later withdrawn. Though not a citizen of first rank either in Ireland or here, his path intersected with many who were and, thus, an account of his life is well worth telling, particularly as his great grandson, John Ireland is doing just that and is now engaged in completing a PhD which will result in a book about his famous ancestor.

Ballaarat Mechanics Institute, Sturt Street, Ballarat, Friday, October 10, 5.30 - 6.30pm - refreshments at 5.00pm. Cost: $3 per talk or $15 for all six talks in the Spring Session
