Hi Stephen,
Many Engine Drivers learnt their trade at a School of Mines. The Ballarat School of Mines educated many engine drivers, for which they obtained an Engine Drivers Certificate.

You should probably take the term as being someone responsible for the
running and maintenance of a steam engine, including in that term a
stationary engine - e.g. one that provides power in some way to a factory, a
mine, a pump, a generator(?) etc, the power possibly being delivered via
belts, pulleys, crankshafts, screws etc.
Certainly at "steam fairs" I've attended in the UK there are plenty of the
traction engine type, but also a very good sprinkling of the stationary
type.
Running and maintenance would include stoking, cleaning, oiling as well as
delivering the right amount of power at the right time! And in the right
place if it wasn't stationary.
Cheers

Many thanks to all who answered my earlier query re my g-g-g-grandfather
Andrew HOWARD and pointed out that ³engine driver² might well have had a
different meaning on the goldfields, i.e. in relation to driving various
types of mining machinery. Any other information about the work of an engine
driver would be gratefully received.
