I wonder if anyone on this list would know whether death duties were payable on deceased estates in the late 1800s and, if so, at what rate or at what level they applied.

My wife's great grandfather, Donald McPherson, died at Satwell in 1898 and his estate was valued by his executors at £951. And, being canny Scots, I wonder if they deliberately held the value under £1000 to avoid death duties?
