Today I have been looking at the Victorian Government Gazettes for 1861
and 1863. Rivetting stuff! So exciting it sets your hair on fire. NOT.
However, my pursuit was the land acquisitions of a couple of Dunolly
lads in 1861 so I persisted and struck gold, so to speak.
I am left a little puzzled, however, and pose a few questions which,
hopefully, listers will be able to help me with.
1. Why would land acquisitions appear in the Government Gazette? The
notices appear under the heading, TITLE DEEDS. It seems odd that they
would be gazetted.
2. In each case, the Title Deeds were "forwarded for delivery at the
Receipt and Pay Offices undermentioned....".
What was a "Receipt and Pay Office"? There seemed to be an awful lot of
them - Maryborough, Amherst, Dunolly, Moliagul, Clunes, Avoca, Talbot,
Majorca, Carisbrook, etc, etc
3. How would I go about finding a map of the actual land for which
titles were applied and granted? The largest piece was 7a. 3r. 21p. and
the smallest just over 1a. All were in Dunolly.
