Hello Bill
Are you sure you have read the terms correctly? Are the words easily
transcribed?
This is my take on your question...........
DEBILITY means weakness leading to morbidity, i.e. general weakness leading
to death
"Love sickness" - very unusual term, hence my question above.... no, not an
STD.
Did the woman have an emotional/hormonal breakdown post childbirth?
Possible, and if the woman wasn't eating/drinking or well then the baby
would not have been getting all the nutrients/feeding/immune system
components that goes with post birthing/breast feeding etc that gives the
baby strength.
But, I wonder also about LOWE (rather than LOVE)
Disease/sickness/syndrome............oculocerebrorenal syndrome. This is
essentially to do with the eyes, brain and renal (kidney) system. What
comes to mind for me is that maybe she had in today's terms
undiagnosed/untreated diabetes which can have an effect on all these systems
of the body. And that would in turn effect the baby in-utero (pre birth)
and post delivery.
There may well be other diagnosis.
Pregnancy also puts stressors on the renal system (kidneys) and there are
numerous pre and post birthing complications.
You may never know!!

> Hi all,

> I have come across the term "love sickness" as a cause of death of a
relative/ The certificate relates to a 28 y.o married women issued in the
Victorian (Australia) goldfields in 1862 (The women died 3 weeks after the
birth of her baby who died 9 days lafter this of of "debility").
>
> Wonder if any lister can provide any information or reference which may
assist in determining the woman's death. She appears to have been sexually
active having a husband and a lover and I would like to determine if the
disease was likely to have been a STD or related to the baby's birth.
