Further to Linda's request regarding information about those listed on the Lindenow Honour Roll, below is information regarding my grandfather, based on his WWI Service Records:
George Stanley (Stan) TELFER enlisted on 20 August 1914, joining the 4th Light Horse Regiment. He embarked for Gallipoli on the "Witshire" in October of that year and was wounded in action in June 1915. In October 1915 he developed enteric fever, necessitating repatriation back to Australia.
By April 1916 he was well enough to resume service and was assigned to the First Light Horse Training Regiment.
In June 1917 he returned to the front, fighting in France, where he was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1918. While serving in France, he was injured on a number of occassions, most notably in September 1918. This episode earned him the Military Cross for " conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a night attack, although twice wounded, this officer at first declined to leave his post. Later he was ordered to do so, but returned after having his wounds dressed. He displayed admirable leadership during the attack, and his reconnaissance during consolidation led to the capture of a strong post which was menacing the right flank." He needed hospitalisation, where he became seriously ill, being discharged some four months later. He returned to Australia in 1919.
Stan also served in the Second World War. He died in 1964, and is buried in the Coongulmerang Cemetery.
If anyone has any information to add to the above, feel free to email me.
