Following on from the posts the other day mentioning much of William Clarke who had originally owned the punt at Wangaratta over the Ovens. Billy the Puntman worked for William until the punt was closed when the new bridge opened.

It seems Billy when suddenly out of work when the punt closed turned highway robber. Bill had held up the Melbourne mail coach early in 1856 and was finally arrested in Albury on 30th September 1856, tried in Beechworth and got a hefty jail sentence for his trouble.
