Wangaratta Dispatch and North-Eastern Advertiser, Wednesday October 18, 1876
"THE OXLEY PLOUGHING MATCH. This match came off on Tuesday last, in a
large paddock belonging to Mr R WOOD, the President of the Oxley shire
Council. The paddock is about 100 acres in extent, and well adapted for
the purpose to which on Tuesday last it was appropriated. The day was
especially suitable for the occasion the sun shining out with brilliancy
after the rain which had fallen. The attendance was good, and at one
o’clock there were about 600 persons upon the ground. The publican’s booth
was the one erected by our townsman Mr George POWELL, who did a good trade
and who supplied an excellent lunch. With respect to this lunch we may
remark that about a quarter to one o’clock the press and the judges partook
of lunch. At its conclusion Mr DUNLOP proposed “Prosperity to Wangaratta,”
remarking that the borough had subscribed the liberal amount of £18 to the
funds of the Ploughing Match. The toast was drunk and acknowledged by mr A
WILSON who thanked the Oxley people for the good feeling displayed in
proposing the toast. He remarked that Wangaratta was identified with the
people of Oxley in a ploughing match, inasmuch as it was held under the
auspices of the Ovens and Murray Agricultural Society. Oxley was also
identified with Wangaratta in the electorate point of view and other
business relations, and he trusted their interests would always remain
combined. With respect to entires exhibited there was shown, Mr McGAVIN’s
entire horse Gratis, which appeared much improved since the last time we
saw him. He bears evidence of the great care bestowed upon him. With
regard to the entries in the various classes they were as follows: Class A
or Champion, Rowland HUGHES, Andrew FERGUSON, W DOIG and R GRAY. Class B
Samuel DOWEY, Geo PATTERSON, David FLEMING, John TANNER, John DINNING and
Alex CARMICHAEL. In Class C the only entry was that of John PATTERSON. In
Class D the entries were James SMITH and Benjamin JONES. The judges in the
classes were as follows; In Classes A and B, John WILSON, Woragee, Wm
WALLACE, Broken River, and Geo PHILLIPSON, of Wangaratta. In Classes C and
D the judges were Mr John BARRIE, of Oxley, Mr John FERGUSON, of Hurdle
Creek and Mr C W LLOYD, also of Hurdle Creek. In addition to the
publican’s booth kept by Mr POWELL we may mention that both Mr BURROWS and
Mr OSBOLDSTONE had refreshment stalls, at which a certain amount of
business was done. Besides the entire shown by Mr McGAVIN, Mr BURKE
exhibited a well bred animal called Traveller by Touchstone, a horse well
calculated to get good cross hacks. With regard to this match it may be
observed that the reason why the attendance was not as numerous as might
have been anticipated may have been caused by the uncertainty of the
weather, as although we have had sunshiny days lately, we have also been
visited with showers every afternoon. Respecting the attendance we may
remark that as the afternoon advanced the number of persons on the ground
perceptibly increased, thus giving a greater amount of liveliness to the
proceedings. We may remark that as to anything like gambling only one
individual appeared upon the ground who showed a desire to get at Her
Majesty’s subjects but he had his career quickly put an end to by the
police. With regard to the entires we may mention that in the afternoon we
observed that Mr BOOKLESS showed his draught horse Victor’s Pride, and his
blood grey Alma. Both these animals seemed to be in excellent condition,
and Alma appeared to be in a very lively state from the way in which he
reared up. About 5 o’clock the judges made their awards. In Class A, the
first prize was awarded to Roland HUGHES, the second to A FERGUSON, and
third to Robert GRAY. In Class B the first prize was awarded to Alexander
CARMICHAEL, the second to John TANNER, and the third to David FLEMING. In
Class C, John PATTERSON was the only competitor, but a first prize was
awarded to him, the judges considering he was well worthy of it. In Class
D the first prize was awarded to Benjamin JONES and the second to James
SMITH. Mr WILLIS, of Wangaratta, had offered a prize of a pair of winkers,
valued 15s, for the best scrape to one pile. The prize was awarded to John
DINNING. Messrs Raphael Bros. had offered a prize for the best finish, and
the committee guaranteed £1 1s. This prize was awarded to Roland HUGHES.
In the evening a dinner was held at GARDNER’s Hotel, a report of which will
appear in our next issue."
