Hello Lynette
Thanks for your note ,why ever did I start that
"Little Dicky Warren "saga never mind we (me especially) have learnt a lot
.Re photos I have one of my
Greatgrandmother who was Jane Warren ,and one of the
Brewer (Charlotte Warren ) family .It was taken in front of
the old stone house on the way to Beechworth, for many
years it was a ruin ,in the 30 s it was converted into a
tobacco kiln , later became an incubator , brooder room for chooks. It has
now been rebuilt or built around, there is
a sign on the gate that says Rising Sun but the Rising Sun
Hill and Creek are much further down towards Wooragee
they took their names from the Rising Sun Hotel.
The Brewer house was built by a Kothe ,think I have seen
that name on the List. I have photographs of William Henry Warren and his
Wife, they are not very good photo
copies and Henry"s handwritten life story penned when he was aged seventy
years and six months He was Richard"s brother"s son.
Now excuse me but it"s question time .I had a look at your web site and
found there an advert for Mitchell"s
coach building factory , and also a name Meyer ,did a lady
by name of Meyer live in Beechworth ,around the Red Hill
area a few years ago ,I spoke to her many times on the
phone ,was supposed to go in for a yarn and a cuppa but
as with so many things in my life I never got "a round tuit "
a kind lady sent me one once to try to entice me into into
writing a History of Wooragee but it had no effect.Unfortunately the Meyer
lady died rather suddenly
so I never met her personally.
Many years ago Piers Foa had a place in the Ovens&
Murray where he told various stories ancient and modern
I used to feed him a few "Lies and Legends" and on one
occasion I told the story of "Wingy" Mitchell the blacksmith .motor
mechanic ,bike repairer ,carpenter ,do
any thing man who had lost the lower part of his left arm
when his gun exploded on a possum shooting expedition
he had made a leather cup which was fastened at the elbow ,and had a piece
of wood at the end with a thread in it to screw in the appropriate tools for
the job he was
working on I remember watching him work on the Dad"s
Model T changing to different tools or forging a special one.Anyway the
paper was sent to a lady named Meryl
at Fairfield she wrote me a letter which I answered then
after a bit of correspondence she sent me a cassette tape
about her father ,Beechworth ,her school.Boxing Day
parades that her father took part in ,on one occasion he was Mitchell in
Tyres (Michelin) I remember that one.
any way Meryl was Family is she still around and do you
know her? She said her father had a marvellous bass
baritone singing voice and was in demand in Beechworth,
on Sundays he would sing in the choirs of the Catholic
and Presbyterian Churches, not at the same time of course
She said the family all sang from small children ,and I think
one of her brothers was with J C Williamson
Would you like a copy of the tape if you can send me an
address, you can find us in the White Pages A R&L E
Wodonga. The typing finger is going on strike must go.
Regards
Alan French
