Patriarchal for a woman? Back then, with many children and everything
done the hard way, I think she'd have been glad to depart this earth
aged 75. Poor woman would be exhausted. ..

Dawn

Congratulations Alan!

Hi Eric and Judy,
This is the piece from the Beechworth paper.1st August 1878.
A Large Family
At the local Land Board recently held at Tallangatta, one piece of
land was applied for by three persons- P Mullins,W Pemberton, and J
Rapsey. The Chairman of the Board asked them severally how many
children they had. The first ,he had ten, the second four, all as big as
himself, but Mr Rapsey put the others in the shade ,by declaring he had
twenty two. This was not the original John Rapsey, this is the Death
Notice and Obituary for his wife. On 26th March at her daughter's
residence at Chiltern Eliza Rapsey, relict of the late John Rapsey
,formerly of Indigo Creek. Aged 76 years

Obituary. The many friends and aquaintances of Mrs Eliza Rapsey will
learn with great regret
of the death of that lady, who expired on the 26th inst
at the patriarchal age of 76 years.
at the residence of her daughter Mrs Cook Chiltern Road.
The deceased lady was the wife of John Rapsey whom she
survived by only 3 years.
The family were long residents of Indigo Creek. Mr Rapsey
had embarked in
agriculture during the 20 years of residence in the locality,
they gained the respect
and esteem of everyone in the neighbourhood as people of a
homely but sterling
disposition.
The couple came to this district in the early 1850's ,first
settling at Reid"s Creek,then
taking up land at Indigo. The deceased lady was buried at
Chiltern on Tuesday.
The Funeral was numerously attended , and solemnised by the
Church of England
Minister. Funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr Oscar
Smith ,undertaker.
A numerous family is left to lament her loss, three sons ,
John ,Thomas,and William,
and daughter Mrs Pleming, residing at Tallangatta ,also Mrs
Cook Chiltern, and
Mrs George , and John French ( my grandmother) of Wooragee.
I think you are from the Pleming line, Don't know about the
bloke with all those kids,
perhaps he had a muster of the local kids for the occasion, a
member of the Rapsey
family from Tallangatta was compiling a family history during a
battle with cancer,sadly
she lost the battle so it seems the history will not be
written.
Thinking back to the word "patriarchal" re Mrs Rapsey , what
does that make me at
eighty five and a half? Maybe best if you don"t answer that.
Regards
Alan French
