OMA 9th January 1875 Hurdle Flat
On New Year's Day, 1st January 1875 the teachers and scholars of this school
numbering about two hundred, accompanied by a large number of friends spent
a most enjoyable day picnicking on the shores of Lake Kerferd. There was in
addition a very numerous gathering from all parts of the district, and it is
estimated that there could not have been less than twelve hundred people on
the ground. Games of all kinds were indulged in throughout the day, and
there was the usual amount of dancing, and flirting and fun making which are
inseparable from such reunions. During the afternoon the prizes were
distributed to the successful scholars by the teacher, Mr Robinson. After
tea a procession was formed, and after enjoying a happy day the children
marched back to the schoolhouse. In the evening a concert was given in the
schoolroom, which was crammed by an audience, who fully appreciated the
vocal and instrumental efforts of Mesdames Palmer, Birtles, and Glass and
Misses F. Hollister, Robinson, and Nichol. After the concert the room was
cleared, and the company to the strains of a good band tripped it merrily
till daylight.
