Dear Peter,
Thank you very much for checking this database of men who fought in the
Boer War. Apparently the whole business of being in the Army in
Australia is quite complicated. An archivist at the National Archives
of Australia (Melbourne), where they hold the pre-1901 records, was
telling me that men "raised" from a land-holding such as Bowna could
have been absorbed into the Australian colonial army. But they could
also have gone on their own to South Africa and fought there -- on
EITHER side. They could also have beeen absorbed into the British
army. Do you think that in the two latter cases, the man would be
included in the database you consulted? That is, how super-complete is it?
Two other possibilities are that Mr. Bonat could have been a
professional soldier, but not fought in any wars, or that he could have
fought in the Boxer Rebellion, or even in the earlier Sudan War.
The archivist is going to try and check out some of these possibilities
for me. However, his wife delivered a baby earlier than anticipated, so
he took some time off.
Best, Carren

Hi Carren,
Have checked the following for variations of BONAT and BOWNA...
http://members.pcug.org.au/~croe/ozb/ozb_idx4.htm
It is looking very likely that Mr Bonat did not enlist for the Boer War in
Australia, isn't it?
Cheers,
Peter R
