Hello Listers,
A very good book on the early days of St Arnaud is "Track of the Years" by
Yvonne Palmer. M.U.P. 1955. I do not know if there have been any reprints ot
not.
I have a copy, and will do look ups if needed, although if the text entry is
long, my typing skills are very slow!
In the Index Swanwater has 8 page references. The first of these, p. 45 "the
original Swanwater run consisted of 70,000 acres and included the Cope Cope
Station..In 1850 the run was divided into North (Cope Cope) and South
(Swanwater)" There follows a fairly detailed account of the early owners of
Swanwater and Cope Cope, and also extracts from various papers which detail
early farming life, including reference to schools.
The surnames Allen and Conley, are not in the Index, but on p. 268 in the
Chapter "Deep Sinking and Dividends" Henry Croyden does, in reference to the
Welcome Nelson mine formed in 1915, which had failed soon after :- "Henry
Croyden, son of one of the St Arnaud miners, was manager of the St Arnaud North
Co. and he made a strong bid for support to persevere with the mine which was
then down to 850 feet"
Hope this is of some help,
Regards
Marcia Penny
