1837 is when registration was introduced. Before that you have to rely
on parish recordss, and they're all over the place. Some are filmed,
some are scanned, some are indexed, some are lost, etc. That's where
the Rootsweb lists are so valuable, for learning where your parish
records are, and how you get to the info.
