Hello Ann,
Yes, I remember my mother making lard, myself smearing eggs with lard and
packing them in lard in a big kerosene tin, sealing it (my father's job)
encasing it in padded calico. Also sending tins of meat, and perhaps butter
which Australian firms produced just for this activity.
But as to who organised it ???? My 80-year-old sister doesn't know,
either. Red Cross was a very active organisation with groups in almost
every area, maybe they were the instigators?. Maybe the churches? Maybe
local government? My childhood impression was that everyone in my parent's
circle of friends were involved.
So, sorry, no help from me.
Regards Ada
